Using the Library Catalog to find History materials

Do a KEYWORD search using the following search strategies:

Combine two search terms to focus a topic by
using
and, or, not.
Example: Lincoln and slaves

Truncation
Use an asterisk * to take the place of letters in a word so that
other forms can be searched at the same time.
Example: slave*

Phrases
Place quotation marks around phrases so all the words are searched
together, rather than independently.
Example:
"united states"

Subject Search – Subject headings require knowledge of the Library of Congress Subject Headings system.  Once you have found a good book on your topic using keyword searching, look for the subject headings found in the catalog record for your book. You can click on those subject headings to find more books on your topic.
