Smithsonian Trinomial Number

If you are researching archaeological sites in the United States you may come across references to an archaeological site number.  These unique codes follow the Smithsonian Trinomial System and are used to identify specific archaeological sites in the U.S.

Each code has three parts: state-county-site number.  For example in Texas the code 41HI134 stands for the 134th archaeological site listed in Hill County Texas.
