Database Search Strategies

Boolean Operators are three words (AND, OR, NOT) that combine keywords into search strings. AND will narrow a search, OR will broaden a search, and NOT will narrow a search by excluding a keyword.

Examples:

Petco AND marketing

"Petco Animal Supplies" OR PETCO

 Petco NOT PetSmart

When developing a search strategy avoid using whole sentences.  Instead break down your topic into keywords and use Boolean Operators.

Correct:      Petco AND marketing

Incorrect:   "I need to find resources about a successful Petco marketing plan."

Quotation Marks can be used to search for exact phrases.  You do not have to put quotation marks around one word.

Correct:    "Petco Animal Supplies"

Incorrect:   "Petco"
