Memorial Materials
Purpose of the Memorial Materials Procedure
- The Northwest Vista College (NVC) Library memorial materials procedure is a guideline for the selection of Library materials in memory of students or staff (do we want to include staff?) who have passed away.
- The intention of this procedure is to ensure that materials selected align with the Library Collection Development Procedure as well the Library mission.
- The memorial materials procedure also ensures that the materials selected reflect the interests of the deceased – whether that is the major they were pursuing or their extracurricular or personal activities/hobbies.
Selection Responsibilities and Criteria for Memorial Materials
- The librarian assigned to purchase these memorial materials as well as the Library Director are responsible for final purchase decisions, based on the criteria outlined in the Collection Development Procedure
- The deceased student’s academic and personal pursuits are the main selection criteria taken into consideration. These interests and hobbies are provided via the Deceased Student Reporting Form that is forwarded to the Library by the Office of Student Conduct and Title IX
- Print books are the required format for memorial materials
- Memorial materials are not subject to deselection criteria for 10 years after being added to the library collection. Deselection criteria are outlined in the Library Collection Development Policy section 8 ( -deselection is up for discussion – would like input from other librarians - still not totally sure about this as one of my main goals is to purchase books that will be perpetually useful to library collection, not ones that will be outdated at any point in time)
