Guidelines for Copying

Educational Multimedia


The following suggestions are from the Alamo College "Copyright FAQs and Fair Use" and were adapted from the Consortium of College and University Media Centers Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia. You can also find information from the Copyright Crash Course.  Limitations mentioned below are the minimum, not necessarily the maximum, suggested for fair use for lawfully obtained copyrighted works being used in non-commercial educational uses only.

 

Motion Media 

  • Up to 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less.

 

 Text Material

  • Up to 10% or 1000 words, whichever is less.

  • Poems: One poem of less than 250 words can be used.  No more than three poems by one poet, or five poems by different poets from any anthology.  If a poem with more than 250 words is used then then no more than three excerpts by a poet, or five exerpts by different poets from a single anthology may be used.

 

    Music, Lyrics, and Music Video

  • Up to 10%, but no more than 30 seconds from an individual work.

 

 Illustrations and Photographs

  • 5 works from a single author.  When using materials from a published collection of works no more than 10% or 15 images, whichever is less, may be used.

 

 Numerical Data Sets

  • Up to 10% or 2500 fields or cell entries, whichever is less from a database or data table.
